Works with JPG, PNG, WebP, HEIC from an iPhone, GIF and BMP.
The model chooser comes first: three on-device networks for people, hair and any subject, one suggested for your photograph, each with its exact first-download size on the button. The photograph stays in this tab.
What this mode does
This route opens on the Subject layer with the models listed first and one marked as suggested: the hair-and-veil model when the photograph looks like a portrait cut by its lower edge, the any-subject model otherwise. Nothing downloads until you press a button, and every button says what it costs — the model from our model file server and the runtime from this site.
The AI here does one job: it decides where the subject ends. Everything after that — the ground, the light, the shadow, the file — is the same deterministic arithmetic as the rest of the page, so a model's outline can be corrected with the brushes and the result is the same every time you save.
Steps
- Open the photographThe colour-and-edges outline appears straight away, with no download, so you can judge whether a model is needed at all.
- Press a modelThe button states its size. A progress bar and Cancel appear while it downloads; it is checked against a published SHA-256 before it is kept.
- Check the outlineThe confidence line says how decisive the network was. Paint keep or erase over anything it got wrong — strokes apply on top of any model.
- Choose the ground and saveEvery ground, canvas and file option is available, and the receipt measures the saved file.
Which model for which photograph
Quick portrait (about 6 MB) is the right first try for a person against a busy room on a slow connection. Hair and veil (about 26 MB) keeps loose hair and sheer fabric partly transparent, which is what makes a portrait on a new ground look real.
Any subject (about 88 MB) is for products, pets and furniture. It is slow on a processor — around seventeen seconds — and much faster on a graphics card, so the page offers the WebGPU runtime for it where your browser has one.
What it cannot do
- A model's confidence figure is how sure it was, not how right it was. Check thin parts, handles and gaps before saving.
- Nothing here generates a background from a prompt, reshapes a person or identifies anyone. The models only separate subject from ground.
- On a phone with little memory the any-subject model may fail to start; the page says why and the colour-and-edges outline is kept.
Questions about ai background changer
Is this AI or is my photo uploaded to an AI service?
The AI runs in your browser. A model is a file that downloads to your device once; your photograph is never sent anywhere, with or without it. The download is the only network traffic a model causes, and it goes one way.
Why does it ask before downloading?
Because a model costs between 6 and 88 megabytes plus the runtime, and on mobile data that matters. The button states the exact figure and the page does not fetch a byte until you press it.
What is WebGPU and do I need it?
WebGPU lets the page run a model on your graphics card. It is used only for the two slow models and only where the browser offers it; the graphics runtime is a separate, larger download that the button includes in its figure. Without it everything still works on the processor.
Can I delete the models afterwards?
Yes. 'Delete downloaded models from this device' in the same panel removes them from this browser's storage, and the next use downloads them again.
Which model is best for a passport photo?
Usually none: a face against a plain wall separates cleanly from colour alone. If the wall is busy, Quick portrait is enough; Hair and veil helps when loose hair matters.

The image you open is read by this page and by nothing else — there is no server behind this domain that could receive it, the outline is worked out inside your own browser either by arithmetic or by an on-device model, and if you ask for a model it is the model that is downloaded to you rather than your photo being sent to it.
