Before you change anything: for Indian passport applications through missions abroad (Global Passport Seva 2.0), the notice says “The photograph must not be altered by computer software.” Changing the background is an alteration. What each body asks for
These instructions are published, they are not secret, and they are also not written for each other. One says plain white; another says light-coloured, preferably white; a third says white and then shows an example that is clearly not pure white. The table reads each one on its own terms and names the ground that satisfies it.

Read on 18 October 2026 from what each body publishes, kept by the editor of this site, next read again by 18 April 2027. A row past its review date says so instead of quietly ageing. Recruitment cycles reissue these instructions and states differ from one another, so the notice you are applying under is the one that decides. Reading the instruction rather than guessing at it
Two words do most of the work. Plain is about detail: no pattern, no furniture, no shadow cast on the wall behind the head, no gradient from a lamp to one side. White is about value. A photograph can fail on either independently, and the commonest rejection is a photograph that is white enough but not plain — a corner of a door frame, or the shadow of the head on the wall behind it.
Replacing the ground fixes both at once, because the replacement has no detail by construction. What it cannot fix is the light on the face. If the original was lit from one side hard enough to throw a shadow on the wall, the face still carries that light after the wall is gone, and some reviewers read an unevenly lit face as a failure of the same instruction. That is a photograph to take again, not one to correct here.
Where the instruction also states a pixel size, a kilobyte window or a density, picking it sets all three: the canvas takes the size, the encoder searches quality until the file lands inside the window, and the density is written into the header. Where it states a face height, crown and chin guides appear on the canvas and you drag the photograph against them — nothing here finds a face, so the receipt calls that line geometry, not a measurement.
What this mode cannot do
- It cannot make an edited photograph acceptable where the instruction forbids software editing. It says so, and offers Check as-is instead.
- It cannot help with forms that capture the photograph live, such as NEET and the Staff Selection Commission's new module; those rows are marked in the table.
- It cannot fix light on the face. Uneven light or a shadow across the face is a reason to re-shoot, whatever the background measures.
Questions about passport photos
Can I change the background of my passport photo here and upload it?
For an application through an Indian mission abroad under Global Passport Seva 2.0, the notice says the photograph must not be altered by computer software, so the honest answer is: re-shoot against a plain white wall, then use Check as-is to measure that photograph's background without changing it. Where an instruction does not forbid editing, the workbench puts the stated ground behind the face and sets the size.
What does Check as-is measure?
It uses the selection to find the background of the photograph you opened and reports its median value, how even it is, the pixel size, the byte count, the density in the header and the format — against the rule you picked. Nothing is changed and nothing is written. A wall photographed under a ceiling light usually reads 210 to 240 with light falling across it, which is the reading that tells you to re-shoot in daylight.
What size does the passport notice ask for?
630 × 810 pixels, a colour photograph with the face filling 80 to 85 per cent of the frame, even light and no shadow on the face or the background. Picking the rule sets the canvas to 630 × 810 and draws crown and chin guides; it does not change the instruction about software editing.
Is a 35 × 45 mm print size still right?
Print sizes are stated per instruction. The table below records what each body's own published document says, with the address it was read from and the date; the notice you are applying under always has the last word.
Will the page tell me the photo will be accepted?
No. The receipt says what was measured on the file and lists what it did not check — the face's position beyond the guides, expression, eyes, glasses, light on the face, and whether the portal accepts it.
